Guess what? Im here to tell you different. I will let you in the secret. You need only a couple of essential tools in your kitchen and I promise with a little bit of imagination you will be cooking like a pro in no time. With the following key things I can guarantee you anything in your pantry, cabinets and fridge can become a gourmet dish without a trip to the supermarket. In fact, I challenge you to.
The first item you need in your kitchen is a cutting board. No, your counter top will not do. You need a sturdy surface you can place your proteins in and cut with precision. Your vegetables, fruits and herbs will be beautiful & uniform using a cutting board. You will NEVER cut on a counter top again. I personally prefer wood. Others enjoy granite. There is many choices. Plastic, wood, metal, glass, thick, thin, big, small. The choice is yours BUT you need at least one in YOUR kitchen. The next item you need its a great chef’s knife also known as a French knife. Yes, there is practically a knife for everything. A bread knife, a stake knife, a butter knife, a pairing knife. The list seems to be endless. But lets face it and be real, unless we went to culinary school some of us feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when she did not know what silverware to use. So until we have and take the time to learn ALL knives available, their uses and/or their advantages lets stick to the basics!
A chef’s knife allows you to do most if not all the cutting you might need around your kitchen. It can be used for slicing, chopping, dicing, mincing, julienne cuts, disjointing large cuts of meat and even smashing garlic. When you are buying one invest in a good one. Stainless steel is the way to go and if at all possible spend a little extra. I promise you, its a tool you will cherish FOREVER!

The third piece of equipment I suggest to become a great cook is a non stick all purpose skillet. Why do I call it an all purpose skillet? It is just that, you can cook ALL in it. I have used my non stick skillet in just about everything, from blanching broccoli to making grilled cheese and everything in between. Do make sure however that it IS non stick. There is not much to say when it comes to a skillet except that it will hardly leave your stove top. When you have a skillet you can chop some peppers and make an omelette. Scramble egg whites and use some left over brown rice with mixed veggies and you will have homemade fried rice.

Fourth, we should all own is an inside grill. Whether it is a grill for the stove top or a counter top grill, like a George Foreman grill, a grill is not only useful but necessary. A grill can be used for meats, fish, vegetables, breads and practically and endless number of possibilities.
Panini’s are a great option for a week night dinner. Grilled chicken is always healthier. Grilled asparagus are tastier than if you boil it. Bottom line: Get a grill!!

Last but not least you should own a Slicer/mandolin. It will transform you, your salads and your kitchen. So lets be honest, most of us grew up not liking/enjoying salads. Why? They were bland. Yes, do start with mix greens but if you use your mandolin to slice carrots, cucumbers, radishes, apples, zucchini within minutes you will have a salad that you will enjoy and you would want to show off!
